The first Monday in May is fashion’s biggest night… but the day the Metropolitan Museum of Art announces the Met Gala’s theme also reigns supreme in the fashion world as a major moment.

On Monday, the Met Museum and Vogue announced that ‘Costume Art’ will be the theme of the spring 2026 exhibition at the Costume Institute, which means celebrities need to start planning their lavish designer ensembles accordingly.

The New York City museum will pair historical and contemporary garments from the Costume Institute for the exhibition, which will be loosely divided into three categories, including the classical body and the nude body, aging bodies and pregnant bodies, and the anatomical body.

The exhibit has been made possible by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his new wife Lauren Sanchezwhich has only added fuel to the fire that he is considering buying the renowned publication as a present for his fashion-obsessed bride.

Last month, a source told the Mail on Sunday that staff was increasingly convinced that the world’s fourth-richest man was preparing to buy parent company Conde Nast as a wedding gift for his love, who is a former journalist.

Of course, the 2026 Met Gala also marks a major moment because it’s the first once since Anna Wintour technically stepped back from one of her famed roles at the publication.

In June, Wintour, 76, announced she was stepping down from one of her roles at Vogue after 37 years. The global director for Vogue and global chief content officer at Conde Nast hired Chloe Malle as the new head of editorial content at Vogue.

Malle’s parents are actress Candice Bergen and French filmmaker Louis Malle.

Fashion lovers are waiting patiently to see how the Met Gala will change now that Malle has been tasked with taking over many aspects of Vogue.

Wintour has famously been incredibly hands-on with the Met Gala over the years, and is credited with making it the splashy A-list affair it has become, beloved by celebrities like Rihanna, the Kardashians, Blake Lively, Zendaya and .

Last year, many stars did not attend the Met Gala, and some people thought it was to avoid making a faux pas because of the theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, which was centered around the political and aesthetic constructs of Black dandyism.

After Vogue announced the 2026 theme on

many fashion lovers shared their excitement, calling it a ‘dream’ and saying they ‘expect a lot.’

On X, previously Twitter, fashionistas rejoiced, with one writing, ‘The Met Gala theme for next year is so hot I moaned out loud.’

Another said, ‘Costume Art for the 2026 Met Gala sounds like it’ll spark some wildly creative outfits can’t wait to see what designers come up with!’

However, not everyone was as excited. On X, one person tweeted: ‘Are we getting elegance or full-blown Halloween-on-a-budget this time?’

Others worried about how celebrity men would dress, with one saying it makes their ‘blood boil’ that men never ‘wear anything but a suit.’

‘The title “Costume Art” refers to the history of the costume institute,’ Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator, said at a press conference.

Bolton, who selects the theme, said fashion has ‘the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body.’

French luxury fashion house Yves Sant Laurent is also sponsoring the exhibit.

Costume Art will run from May 10, 2026 through January 10, 2027, following the Met Gala on May 4, 2026.
