Most women fantasize for years about their engagement day — where it will happen, when, and with whom. But, what they don’t dream about is getting their beautiful engagement ring cut off their finger just hours after the proposal. Unfortunately for AnnaBelle Warner, that’s exactly what happened.

On the night of Saturday, Oct. 25, in Ohio, Warner, 20, and her then boyfriend, Will Munhall, 22, drove out toWarner’s family farmafter dinner. There, waiting for them, was Warner’s childhood cow, Buttercup, wearing a sign reading “Will You Marry Me?”

“It was absolutely perfect and so personal to us,” Warner tells PEOPLE.

When the ring was first slipped onto Warner’s finger, she could immediately tell it was a tight fit.

“Will had bought my ring on a trip to Ireland a few weeks before. We had to guess my ring size based on other rings I owned, which didn’t fit perfectly,” Warner tells PEOPLE. “When he put the ring on me during the proposal, it was definitely snug, but I didn’t care. I had been waiting to be engaged, and I wanted it on!”

Warner chose to ignore the snugness of her ring for as long as possible. But that same night, her discomfort escalated.

“As the night went on and we met up with family, I started realizing it was getting tighter and tighter,” says Warner. “Around 11:15 p.m. I told Will, ‘I have to take this off before I fall asleep or my finger is going to be purple.”

Warner and Munhall tried everything to get the ring off — elevation, ice, cold water, dish soap — but nothing worked. In the end, they had no choice but to drive to their local fire department and have the ring cut off.

Fifteen minutes after arriving at the fire station, the ring had successfully been removed.

“I panicked a little because I didn’t think you could fix a ring once it was cut,” says Warner. “Will felt terrible and was so apologetic the whole time, even though it wasn’t his fault at all.”

The next day, Warner and Munhall took the cut ring to a jeweler, and thankfully — despite Warner’s original fears — the jeweler assured her her ring could be repaired. Less than a week later, the ring was returned.

“I had it back by that Friday, and it’s been perfect ever since.”
