Woman Refuses To Eat Thanksgiving Dinner Made By Her Father

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2017, but her dad has never taken it seriously
  • In the past, he has accidentally served her food that has been cross-contaminated
  • So, when he invited her over for Thanksgiving, she said she would bring her own food — but that didn’t sit right with him

A woman was labeled “selfish” for refusing to eat the Thanksgiving dinner made by her dad out of fear it might cause an allergic reaction.

In a Reddit post, the 26-year-old explained that she was diagnosed with celiac disease in 2017.

“For those of you who aren’t familiar with celiac disease, it’s a severe allergy to wheat/gluten,” she began. “Even the tiniest crumb will give me debilitating stomach pain and I’ll basically live in the bathroom for the next 2 days. exposure will increase the severity of a reaction and even lead to permanent intestinal damage.”

Despite the debilitating reaction, she said her dad “has never acknowledged” that she has such a severe allergy.

“Shortly after being diagnosed I spent thanksgiving at his house and had a reaction. He replied with ‘it was only a little bit of flour, you’re being dramatic,’” she recalled.

She noted that “it hurt” for him to see first-hand how much pain she was in, yet “still chose to dismiss” her allergy.

“Over the years I’ve heard many comments along those lines. ‘It’s only one bite you’ll be fine’ and ‘celiac didn’t exist 20 years ago, your doctor is ripping you off,’ ” she wrote. “I’ve even tried showing him medical documentation to no avail.”

Given his refusal to accept her dietary restrictions, among other things, the two are no longer very close. While she only sees him a few times a year, this year, he was hosting Thanksgiving and asked if she wanted to come.

She agreed, noting that she hadn’t seen a few family members who live overseas in a long time. However, when she asked about the food menu, she began questioning her decision to attend.

“I asked about gluten free dishes and again, he brushed me off and said ‘you’ll be fine it’s just one meal,’” she wrote. “After some back and forth, I decided to let him know I will be bringing my own food and that I don’t feel comfortable eating what he prepared.”

However, he claimed she was “selfish and being vain,” leading her to turn to Reddit for outside opinions.

Other people with dietary restictions flooded to the comments section, assuring the woman she did the right thing.

“Fellow Celiac gal here – you are 100% NTA in this situation,” one user replied. “I too have had friends and family dismiss my dietary needs no matter how little accommodation I ask of them.”

“If you do still feel like going so you can see your other relatives, I would stick to your guns about bringing your own food no matter what. But… I would also be careful about where you store/handle it just in case anyone’s inclined to sprinkle crumbs in the twisted interest of ‘proving a point’ about how its not a big deal,” they added.

“Protect your health at all costs. I wouldn’t trust anything he made due to cross contamination,” another added. “Depending on your severity, you might want to show up after dinner just to spend time with family and not worry about eating.”
