A new global peace prize has appeared on the scene, an award created by FIFA, not a Nobel Prize.

According to the agencyAssociated PressFIFA said this week that it would introduce an annual award to reward “individuals who have taken exceptional and extraordinary measures for peace.”

The federation revealed only a few details about the award, and did not indicate that the potential winners would be limited to celebrities from the world of sports. This has sparked widespread speculation that it might be awarded to President Donald Trump, who has publicly – if so far unsuccessfully – called for the Nobel Peace Prize to be awarded to him.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Trump have built a strong alliance in preparation for next year’s World Cup, which the United States, Canada and Mexico will jointly host. The two men met on Wednesday – the day FIFA announced its new award – in Miami, where they delivered speeches at a conference of business leaders.

Will Donald Trump win it?

Infantino had previously made clear that he sees Trump as a champion of world peace. On October 9, the day before this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner was announced, he wrote on Instagram that Trump “definitely deserves” the award for his efforts toward reaching a peace agreement in Gaza.

The next day, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was not Trump, but Maria Corina Machado, a pro-democracy activist in Venezuela.

When Infantino was asked in Miami on Wednesday whether Trump would win the FIFA award, he laughed and said: “On December 5, you will see it.”

How will the award be announced?

The award will be announced on December 5 in Washington when the World Cup draw is held at the Kennedy Center, the arts venue that Trump remodeled this year.

The date and location of the huge football event of great importance to players and fans around the world were revealed in the Oval Office last August.

During the draw ceremony, the qualified teams will be distributed into 12 groups, each containing four teams, which will determine the schedule for the opening stage of the tournament, which will be held in 16 cities during the coming months of June and July, with the participation of 104 matches. The Peace Prize represents a departure from tradition at the draw ceremony, which usually focuses exclusively on football.

Why is FIFA doing this?

While FIFA promotes football as a tool for peace and unity, it has never received an official peace award before.

If Trump wins the FIFA award, it will likely reinforce the belief that the award was created in response to the US president not winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
