But, like all other convenience foods, they are not made equal. While some can offer a healthy solution, others may be marketed as convenient and healthy but actually be impacting your health negatively – especially if you consume them regularly.

We asked Dr Federica Amati, head nutritionist at ZOEto select the ‘healthiest’ ready meals from the supermarkets using the nutrition app’s latest tool, the Processed Food Risk Scale.

The scale splits processed foods into four categories: no risk, low risk, moderate risk and high risk, based on energy density (how many calories per gram of food), energy intake rate (how quickly you eat the calories), hyperpalatability (how easy it is to keep eating ) and non-culinary additives, including artificial colors, sweeteners and preservatives.

Below, Dr Amati shares her verdict on 13 popular supermarket ready meals – and whether some of the additives or clever combination of ingredients make them harmful than good for your health…

This no-risk meal offers high-quality carbohydrates and polyphenols from a variety of colourful plants. The combination of high fibre butter beans and fats in the halloumi also help to maintain stable blood sugar levels, giving this ready meal a high food score as well as no-risk.

Packed with 11 different plants and whole foods to nourish your gut microbiome, this meal is rich in both fibre (8.5g) and plant-based protein (26.6g) – providing lasting satiety. There are no worrisome additives and the way the foods have been processed don’t pose a risk in terms of hyperpalatability.

This meal hits the mark for both hearty and healthy, combining fats from the cheese with essential vitamins and fibre from the veggies, giving it a high meal score of 70. Minimally processed and without harmful additives, it falls into the no-risk ZPF category.

This bake stood out as one of Tesco’s better options, as it is packed full of antioxidants, fibre, vitamins and minerals. According to the ZPF, this ready meal poses no risk to your health thanks to no harmful additives and no engineering to make it hyperpalatable. You could add a side of veggies to give this meal an extra plant boost or some pan-fried tofu for a good source of plant protein.

This ready meal offers 23g of protein per serving, helping you to feel fuller for longer. It serves well as an occasional meal for those busy days with no processing risk to your health. The flavours and combination of ingredients doesn’t risk high energy intake rate, meaning you’ll absorb energy in a way that doesn’t lead to overeating.

While this meal isn’t recommended for regular consumption on its own due to its high salt and low fibre content, it falls under the no-risk category for the ZPF. It is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for your gut microbiome and are essential to support heart and brain health. Add a large serving of legumes and vegetables (such as broccoli, beans, peas, green beans and salad) for a fibre boost.

7. Lidl Chef Select High Protein Chicken Shawarma

This is packed with whole foods, whole grains, legumes and vegetables to boost your daily plant count. It also provides a third of your recommended daily fibre and than 35g of protein: a powerful combination for long-lasting fullness and great nutrient density. Foods such as this, though processed, deliver on convenience without added negative impacts. This is what processed foods can bring as a positive solution for our food choices.

Most of Aldi’s choices leave a little to be desired, but this Teriyaki Noodles Protein Pot stands out. It’s high in protein (>30g per serving), which means it’s likely to be satiating and help you manage hunger levels throughout the day. It has no additives or preservatives, but it is hyperpalatable and easy to eat quickly. Consider adding an extra serving of veggies to boost the plant count and fibre intake. This ready meal is of a side than the main event.

The best of an indulgent bunch, but with a respectable ZOE food score of 60 and low risk to your health. This meal offers high-quality fats and protein from salmon, with a satisfying white wine sauce and potatoes. Serve with whole grain and legumes to boost its fibre content and increase plant variety.

Bol’s Chickpea Jalfrezi Power Pot Protein+ is packed with plants and contains no additives, making it a great choice for a convenient meal. While there is processing involved in making this product, it comes with no risk to your health, according to the ZPF.

This ready meal falls under the no-risk category for the ZPF. It has no hidden additives, and the combination of ingredients doesn’t make it hyperpalatable or risk high energy intake rate. With 10g fibre per pack, it also makes up a third of the recommended daily intake which is great as 96 per cent of us fail to reach the minimum recommended daily intake of 30g per day.

This is rated medium risk according to the ZPF, so it wouldn’t be the best everyday choice. Its additive category is low risk, but watch for its hyperpalatability and high energy intake rate. Consider having a plant-packed starter before enjoying this to up your fibre intake and feel satiated. And don’t be fooled by the ‘Home’ in the name – these marketing tactics make the dish feel wholesome than it really is.

A high fibre, high protein, vegan ready meal packed with 16 plants. This is a perfect combination to keep you feeling full and satiated for longer, and feed your gut microbiome. It has three additives, but none that are high risk, and is a healthy choice for a quick dinner.
